The HookKnown isn't the same as trusted
You've been showing up to this group for months. People know your name and your face. You're visible.
But are you trusted? And even if you are — does that trust mean they'll actually put their own reputation on the line to send you business? Those are three different things, and the gap between them is exactly where most networkers get stuck.
The Core IdeaVisibility → Credibility → Profitability
Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of BNI, describes every referral relationship as moving through three stages. Visibility — they know who you are. Credibility — they trust that you're good at what you do. Profitability — they actively send you referrals and advocate for you.
The order is fixed, and it can't be rushed. The classic mistake is reaching for Profitability-level results — asking for referrals — while you've only earned a Visibility-level relationship. Then you wonder why nothing comes.
"The VCP Process is the foundation of all successful networking."
— Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of BNISee ItTrust climbs in one direction
You can't jump from "they know me" to "they refer me." Credibility is the step in the middle — and the one people try to skip.
Teaching PointsThe three stages, plus the two traps
- 1
Visibility — they recognize you
People know your name and face. That's a starting point, not a result. Recognition is not a referral.
- 2
Credibility — they trust your work
They'd stake their own reputation on you. Built through 1:1s, follow-through, and showing up consistently — not just showing up.
- 3
Profitability — they advocate for you
They think of you, introduce you, and send business your way. This stage is earned, never claimed.
- 4
The mistake
Expecting Profitability-level results from a Visibility-level relationship — asking for referrals before the trust is built.
- 5
The timeline
Moving a relationship from V to C to P usually takes 6–24 months. That's not slow — that's how referral trust actually works.
For each person in the room, what stage are you actually in with them — V, C, or P? And what would it take to move just one relationship from Credibility to Profitability this month?
Three moves toward Profitability
- Map the room: beside each regular member, mark V, C, or P — where you honestly stand today.
- Book a 1:1: pick one Credibility-stage relationship and schedule it this week. That conversation is how C becomes P.
- Keep one promise: send the intro, article, or follow-up you said you would — and post a clear ask on the EPIC Referral Board so Profitability-tier contacts have something concrete to act on.
